Is Now the Time to Sell?

By: Wilmington Trust, a wholly owned subsidiary of M&T Bank Corporation

The Business Owners Outlook is a quarterly survey that explores business owners’ concerns and outlooks on themes that are most important to them.

  • In this issue, “Is Now the Time to Sell?” survey respondents share their attitudes toward transitioning their business in light of their perceptions of macroeconomic and political conditions
  • The survey found that the majority of business owners are personally unprepared to transition their business, and many say that their business is not ready to be sold
  • This suggests that many business owners consider themselves to be invulnerable to the many risks of not having a transition plan in place, including market volatility, an economic downturn, needing to transition their business earlier than expected, and increased competition for buyers and investors
  • In our experience, planning early is planning well. When business owners plan as if they are going to sell the business tomorrow, even if the event is years away, they have a much higher likelihood of a positive outcome
